Johnny and I were married recently and have a formed our own family. I liked the idea of having us share one name together, to clearly identify our family. As the broader society continues to balk at using the label of "marriage" to same-sex relationships, I have the power to affix my own label to my family. In my case, that label is "Malanga".
I get to use "Malanga" all day long when I answer my phone, mail a letter, or send an email. It’s an easy type of activism and one that I have found to be very empowering. I particularly enjoy when people who I know are uncomfortable with same-sex marriage are now forced to refer to me as "Mr. Malanga."
I'm still getting used to my new name, but I'm extremely happy with it. To me, it marks a new, fresh beginning -- a new life. I hope that my friends at Vishnick McGovern Milizio feel the same way about their new name.
Now if I could only get a logo as cool as theirs...
